How should I respond to negative feedback?

Answer

Part of your journey as a Capella learner requires that you navigate the varying types of feedback you will receive from different people, and it is your job to decide which feedback you will accept or won’t accept, and why.

  • Always remember that feedback exists to make you a better writer and a better professional.
  • Take a deep breath and keep your cool: initial reactions aren’t always 100% accurate. If you need to, walk away from the computer for a moment and return with a new set of eyes. You can also ask someone else to read it and give their impression.
  • Ask for clarification on whatever your reviewer doesn’t like. A lot of things don’t often translate well in an online environment, so asking for clarification is a good habit to get into as an online learner.
  • Ask questions that are oriented to a solution. This is especially important when working in teams or group projects. For example, “So if I change XYZ, my argument will be stronger?” or “If I add ABC, I’ll be able to reach more clients/learners?”
  • Try not to dwell on hurtful feedback, as it likely won’t matter in a few years. Remember the big picture!
