How can I get a "viewable" backup of my RefWorks account? How can I export my citations out of RefWorks?

Answer

Note: This feature is only available in "Legacy" RefWorks.

If you are still using "Legacy" RefWorks, you may want to consider migrating at a time convenient for you. You can find more information about migrating in our RefWorks Migration Library Guide

To create a viewable backup of your citations/export your citations out of RefWorks, export citations to a different bibliographic manager, and import citations from an exported file, see the instructions below:

To export a copy of all or part of your RefWorks database to your computer:

  3. Choose RefWorks Tagged Format from the Export Format menu.
  4. Click the Export button in the bottom right corner. Your references will be exported as a .txt file.
  5. Look for the green Completed box in the bottom right corner of the window.
    • If you do not receive a Download prompt, choose the Click Here link within the complete box to open and save your file or email it.
    • Follow your browser's instructions for viewing the file and be sure to save the file to your hard disk before closing.

  5. Look for the green Completed box in the bottom right corner of the window.
    • If you do not receive a Download prompt, choose the Click Here link within the complete box to open and save your file or email it.
    • Follow your browser's instructions for viewing the file and be sure to save the file to your hard disk before closing.
  6. After you save the file, you may send it to your intended user. Follow the specific software directions for importing the records.
