One frustrating part of a job search is that when we are not considered for or offered a position we feel we are a good fit for, we usually do not know the reason why.  When this happens, a danger is that we attempt to come up with a reason on our own. Although there have been published articles that show that older workers may experience longer job searches, the reason may or may not be their age.

The more important question may be: what can I do to limit the effect that my age has on the impression I make on a potential employer. Some things many employers seek are:

  • Adaptability and the energy to deal with change and learn new things
  • Comfort with technology and the savvy to use technology to facilitate doing a job

Be sure to look for ways to express these qualities on your resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile, as well as in interviews.

Lastly, never underestimate the power of a first impression. Think about updating your look including hairstyle, glasses, or interview outfit. You want to put your “best foot forward” when networking and interviewing.
